Year 3
Summer term 1
Reading
In reading this half-term, the children will be focussing on ‘The Last Bear’ by Hannah Gold as their fiction text. They study the author’s choice of vocabulary and the impact it has on the reader, make inferences about characters and explore how to make plausible predictions.
To help your child at home, please continue to encourage them to read daily and record their progress in their planners for the teachers to see.
Writing
During each half-term, the children will produce one piece of fiction and one piece of non-fiction writing. Throughout these learning journeys, they will acquire new grammar skills, practise their application, and develop extended pieces of writing.
The first piece of writing that children will compose is a narrative. They will write setting descriptions, explore vocabulary choices and learn how to vary sentence openers.
Maths
During this half-term, children will learn how to tell the time, aiming, ultimately, to be able to tell the time to the nearest minute. After time, the children will complete a geometry unit on shape.
Please help your children to practise their time-telling at home.
Science
During this half-term, children will complete a chemistry unit on rocks and soils. They will learn to classify rocks according to their properties and will learn how fossils are formed.
History
This half-term, children will continue their learning about the Romans. They will learn how they invaded Britain and their influence on Britain today.
Geography
In Geography, the children are researching aspects of London’s physical and human features, the benefits they have in the area and will use this knowledge to decide whether London should build more buildings or acquire more boats.
Languages
In Spanish this half-term, the children will begin learning about families and will use their new and learned knowledge throughout the year to describe who is in their family, what they look like and how old they are.
Computing
In computing, children are learning to design and make animations using stop-motion animation.
RSHE
The children will recap healthy living (previously taught in science) and the impact this has on their bodies and how it can increase our chances of illnesses. The children will begin using formal debate to discuss an issue, chosen by the children, regarding habits to support health.
RE
In RE this half-term, the children will be investigating the meanings behind symbols, specifically the tree and what it represents in their lives and also the lives of Christians and Hindus within their tradition.
PE
This half-term, we will continue work on our Physical cog as we complete the Real PE unit. This cog teaches the children to develop their reaction and response skills. The children will also be learning how to play tennis using the skills they have learnt.
