During the Summer 1 term, Year 5 pupils will continue to build on their knowledge and skills through a rich and engaging curriculum.
English

Writing: Pupils will explore the moving narrative of 'The Light in Everything' by Katya Balen. They will focus on capturing the emotional depth of the characters, using figurative language and varied sentence structures to convey complex feelings and atmosphere.

Reading: Through our study of 'The Light in Everything', pupils will develop advanced comprehension skills. We will focus on identifying nuances in character perspective, making high-level inferences, and discussing the author’s choice of motifs and themes.
Maths
This term, our focus moves to Fractions. Children will deepen their understanding by learning to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. They will also progress to multiplying proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers, supported by visual models and real-world problem-solving to build mathematical fluency.
Science
In Science, pupils will investigate Life Cycles. We will compare the fascinating stages of growth across different groups, including mammals, insects, amphibians, and birds. Children will learn about the distinct processes of metamorphosis and the various ways these animals reproduce and raise their young.
Geography
Children will explore the Amazon Rainforest in South America. This study will cover both physical geography, such as the layers of the rainforest and its unique climate, and human geography, including the impact of deforestation and how indigenous communities interact with their environment.
History
In History, pupils will continue their investigation into Ancient Greece. We will further examine the lasting legacy of this civilisation, focusing on how their advancements in democracy, philosophy, and architecture continue to influence and impact modern society globally.
Religious Education
In R.E., pupils will explore The Umma. We will consider the concept of a global community in Islam, looking at how the sense of belonging and shared responsibility unites Muslims around the world through faith and practice.
Art
In Art, children will transition from 2D work to Sculpture. They will study examples of famous sculptures to understand form and space before developing their own practical skills, using various materials to create expressive 3D pieces.
Music
In Music, we will be exploring the interrelated dimensions of music. Pupils will focus specifically on rhythm and texture, learning how different layers of sound work together. Additionally, children will begin to work with musical notation, learning to read and write symbols to represent their musical ideas.
